Ever considered the variety of ways one could utilize a metered parking space to encourage creativity, spontaneity, generosity, and playfulness and to challenge the way that public space is used? Well, you're in luck! Friday, September 21 is Park(ing) Day - an international event that invites city dwellers everywhere to transform metered parking spots into temporary parks for the public good. Parking spaces along Peabody Place between Front Street and Second Street will be transformed into parks in celebration of this event.
If you, a group of your friends, or your organization would like to participate, please submit a written description and a sketch of your park idea to parkingdaymemphis@gmail.com on or before Friday, August 31 to be considered for this year's event.
A few things to consider:
  • The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat. If you would like to find out more about this international event please explore: http://parkingday.org/
  • In keeping with the objectives of PARK(ing) Day, commercial transactions and/or exchanges are prohibited in the park installations. Parks may not be used to sell services or merchandise nor to collect donations of any kind.
  • Keep in mind that all parks must be installed and dismantled on the day of the event and that they must be on display for the entire duration of the event.
  • Avoid creating a park that is purely informational and without creative or artistic design.
The individuals/groups/organizations selected to participate in PARK(ing) Day will be responsible for obtaining all materials needed to bring their park idea to life. In addition, there is a $50 fee to secure two parking spaces along Peabody Place (your park could take over two parking spaces, or you may choose to use one of the spaces to park your vehicle in during the event).
