Follow My Husband: Becoming an Extreme Couponer: Target

This photo is of me with all the bargain items I purchased.  I received some of these free and the most I paid for any one item was $.99 (including the Tylenol Precise Heat pads normally $5.99) Yes, I am starting to enjoy the thrill of collecting random items. (From wife, we do use these items really not that random ;0) )

Target's Gift card deals:

The main purpose of my Target trip was to purchase newborn diapers. Each week, Target will "target" certain items for special stock up deals. These usually take the form of "Buy two at XXX lowered price and get a $5 Target gift card." Last week, if you purchased two large boxes of Pampers or Huggies at $19.79 each, you received a $5 gift card. The beauty of this deal is that you do not need to buy two of the exact same. We purchased a set of Huggies (with a $2 coupon) and a set of Pampers (with $1 a coupon) and received a $3 discount PLUS a $5 gift card. My wife was not super happy with this deal as normally she would have a Target Store coupon to stack on top of each Man. coupon but she didn't have any.

Random deal hunting:

Shana also included several extra coupons and told me to get the best deal possible. One was a $1 off Scotch scissors which I used on a $1.99 pair. Since Shana is always borrowing (and losing) my scissors, this is my reward for doing all of the shopping. She also gave me a coupon $1 off NYC color makeup and I was told to just get something free. Although tempted by several more psychedelic shades of nail polish available for $.94, I purchased a $.97 eyeliner pencil that I knew she would use.

My Big OOPS:

I previously mentioned getting flustered at checkout. When I went to make my Target purchases, we had originally planned to use a previously received $5 Target card (from a diaper deal as you can't use them on the purchase in which you receive it) and a gift card we received as a baby shower gift. However, at checkout, I was juggling the newly received $5 card (from the diapers), the coupons and thinking more about dinner rather than the checkout process and just went ahead swiped my credit card and concluded the transaction. The moment he handed me the receipt, I realized what I had done. As I stared blankly at the receipt, the cashier inquired if he had made a mistake. I told him I was supposed to have used a gift card and that my wife was not going to be pleased. He consoled me with a polite "Dude, that sucks."

Always remember to have a sense of humor about these things. We all make mistakes and I will rise up to coupon again some other day....

Mark, don't worry about your "Big Oops!". I have been couponing for years, and I still get flustered sometimes at checkout and make the same mistake. There's always next time! (And you just know there will be a next time.)
