Making Your Own Lotions

Now that the cooler weather is moving in I've already noticed a "huge" difference in the dryness of my skin. So you know me, I'm always up to trying my own things. I went to GNC this afternoon on a mission to purchase some items to try out my own lotion. This is an "Organic Lotion"

What I made makes my skin feel and look great, but it is more of a liquid (unless it gels the longer it sits). I fixed it tonight! I didn't have a blender so I used a processor, big mistake. Tonight I ended up putting a little melted beeswax and I used a beater for 5 mins. It whipped right up! I also added some lavender drops for a better smell. Michaels is much LESS than GNC and you can find all the products in the candle making section. You also can eliminate the lecithin, when you use the beeswax.

Here is the base which is called an emulsifier, it suppose to blend the water and oil together.
  • 1/2 cup of distilled water
  • 1/2 cup oil (olive, almond, grape seed etc) I used Almond Oil
  • 1 TBS lecithin (I used granules)

Combine ingredients in a blender either on whip or cream. Then I added:

  • 6 drops of Geranium Oil
  • 3 drops of Myrrh Oil
  • 2 drops of Vitamin E Oil

Store in your refrigerator and shake before use.

You may not like the smell of Geranium Oil, but I used it b/c it's a good oil to support balance and rejuvenating skin conditions and for wrinkled and matured skin.

Myrrh is a gentle oil that is effective in replenishing moisture .

Vitamin E is an excellent antioxidant and helps to protect the skin as well as a nice preservative.

You do not have to add the last ingredients. You can add any type of oil you'd like for smell. I also picked up lavender and eucalyptus.

Another Lotion that a relative used to make:

Petroleum Jelly, Baby Lotion, Vitamin E oil/cream (opt) and Vitamin A/D cream (opt)

Place 2 larger containers of petroleum jelly in a pan of water on stove (keep water on med heat) to soften -- be sure to remove the lids. While this is softening, begin emptying two or four (16 oz) bottles of baby lotion into a mixing bowl.

Slowly add one container of petroleum jelly that has softened. The bottom portion of the jar will be liquid, which is fine, so pour slowly into lotion, mixing at the same time.

Add the remaining two bottles of lotion, then the remaining jar of petroleum jelly, keeping your mixer on while doing so. Add vitamin E oil in a small quantity.

Continue whipping the lotion for another five minutes. This makes it smooth and creamy. Place it in the container of your choice. This makes a large mixing bowl full, approximately 10-12 cups.

Here is a great site I found w/different ideas for lotion The Dollar Stretcher. It contains similar products that I listed above. I'm going to try and add some beeswax to my lotion I made yesterday. Although, it feels really good on my skin and does a wonderful job I would like it to be more cream than liquid.

How do you store your lotion??

I actually just made a small amount for myself so I put it in a little plastic container. You can buy little storage things at the dollar tree or look for old glass jars.
