Getting your yard ready for Halloween

Can you believe it’s almost Halloween? It seems like yesterday there were kids running
around the neighborhood playing in the hot summer sun, but now those same kids will
be turning up in droves in their costumes, each more excited than the last. If you’re sick
of the same old decorations in your yard every year for Halloween, check out our list of
great things you can do to get your yard safeand looking good! for Halloween this
year.

Get your lawn in good shape
Halloween is the most popular day of the year when it comes to your lawn. Think about
it: when else are that many people going to be coming up to your front door in one
night? In order to get your lawn in good shape and looking healthy for the holiday, be
sure to pay special attention to your yard in the fall. This includes:
● Raking your leaves: Be sure to continuously rake the leaves in your lawn,
otherwise you could potentially be inviting diseases into your grass. Wet leaves
sitting on the top layer of your lawn can prevent nutrients from getting to the
roots, and can facilitate disease growth. You can even use these leaves to mulch
your lawn, and create a compost pile.
● Mowing your lawn: Be sure to continue mowing your lawn as long as it
continues to grow! Make sure you keep your mower blades sharp, and mow with
your blade set ½ to 1 inch higher than in the summer.
● Watering your lawn: Just because summer is over, and the weather is cooler
doesn’t mean your lawn isn’t still thirsty! Be sure to give your lawn ½ to 1 inch of
water per week unless it rains.
● Controlling unsightly weeds: Be sure to put down a preemergent treatment in
your lawn in the fall. Preemergent herbicides are key to the fight against many
types of weeds, and will kill weeds at the roots and prevent spring weeds.

Light up your lawn like a Jackolantern
When you’re getting your lawn ready for trickortreaters on Halloween night, you’ll want
to minimize the risk of falls so the kids will have plenty of boos, but not booboos. Aside
from your regular JackOLanterns and candles, deck out your lawn with lots of lighting
so the kids can see where they are going. What’s more, if they can see a lit up pathway
to your door, there will be less trampling damage to wake up to on November 1!

Make your lawn safe for trickortreaters
With all of the excitement about candy, trickortreating, and spooky frights around every
bend, it’s no wonder that children find themselves a little clumsy on Halloween night.
Make navigating your yard a bit easier for the kids this year by:
● Removing obstacles as much as possible so trickortreaters have a clear path to
what matters: the treats!
● Moving lawn furniture, statues, power cords, and other fall hazards out of the way
to minimize the risk of tripping or falling over things.
● Adding a few outdoor lights around walkways to ensure trickortreaters can see
as they come up to your house.
● Removing piles of leaves, as they can obscure pathways and hide potential
obstacles.
● Trimming any shrubs or branches in the front yard so they don’t accidentally
scratch visitors.

Turn your yard into a spooky scene
When it comes to giving the kids a fright this year, there are plenty of fun DIY tricks you
can do to ensure that your house is the Halloween favorite this year. Check out these
easy techniques to give you the spookiest house on the block:
● To make DIY tombstones, simply flatten shipping boxes, spray paint them gray,
and write names and dates with a permanent marker. This is a fun idea to do
with the kids too, as they will have a great time thinking up funny names to put on
the tombstones.
● Make a walkway with spooky ghost lights! Use clear, empty milk jugs and draw
spooky ghost faces on them in permanent marker. Then, cut a hole in the bottom
of each jug to place a small, artificial candle inside. Line your new, spooky ghost
lights around your walkway to light the way for trick or treaters on Halloween
night!
● Although carved pumpkins are the quintessential Halloween prop, you don’t have
to get stuck in a rut with the decorations. Instead of just carving a face on a
pumpkin this year, kick it up a notch! Try painting pumpkins fun colors, adding
sequins, glitter, stickers, and even googly eyes. Adding a little something
different will set your yard apart from the rest this Halloween without breaking the
budgetor tradition!
