Cute & Inexpensive Valentine Ideas

Here are some cute and inexpensive ways to add a little extra love to your Valentine’s Day!

1. Write a love note to your Valentine, gluing conversation hearts where appropriate as part of the sentences.
2. Fill your Valentine’s briefcase or desk at work (if you’re able) with Hershey’s Hugs and Hershey’s Kisses.
3. Go ‘old school’… sort of… instead of a “mixed tape” make a “mixed CD” – perhaps with music from when you first started dating.  As an extra surprise you could record a short message to put at the start of the CD and then have it in his/her car.  When he/she starts the car for work the next morning the CD will automatically start.
4. Bake heart shape cookies and use frosting to turn them into conversation hearts… instead of using typical sayings you could write words or inside jokes that only mean something to the two of you!
5. (This one is not cheap)  Load a digital photo frame with pictures of the two of you (perhaps in chronological order) and send it to your significant other at work for their desk.  A less expensive version would be to print the photographs and put them in an album.
6. Bubble bath & wine
7. Make heart shaped pancakes for breakfast.
8. Write a “remember when” and account for all of your favorite memories
9. Send a love text to his/her phone – 1 per hour for each hour you are apart on Valentine’s Day
10. Make an acrostic name poem; making each letter of his/her name a characteristic or trait you adore about him/her.

Recipe of the Day: Peppered Steak with Mushrooms and Red Wine Pan Sauce

This delicious recipe is Valentine's Day worthy and comes from Whole Foods:

Peppered Steak with Mushrooms and Red Wine Pan Sauce  Serves 2

Share the love and a sweetheart steak on Valentine's Day with this recipe for two. While your steak rests, make the red wine sauce in the same skillet, capturing any flavor left behind. Thinly slice the steak to share and pour two glasses of wine! Serve with your favorite green vegetable.

Ingredients

1 sweetheart steak, or 1 (12-ounce) New York strip or ribeye steak
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
6 teaspoons butter, divided
8 ounces sliced cremini mushrooms
1 large shallot, thinly sliced (about 1/3 cup)
1/2 cup dry red wine
1/3 cup beef broth

Method

Pat steak dry and coat with pepper and salt. Set aside. In a medium skillet, heat 1 teaspoon butter over medium-high heat until hot. Add mushrooms and 1 tablespoon water. Cover and cook about 5 minutes or until mushrooms release liquid and start to become tender, stirring occasionally. Uncover and cook 3 to 4 minutes longer or until mushrooms are tender and golden. Transfer to a bowl.

Melt 3 teaspoons butter in the skillet over medium-high heat. Add steak and brown on all sides, until done to your liking. Remove and cover to keep warm.

Add shallot to the skillet and cook until starting to brown, 30 seconds to 1 minute, stirring. Add wine and stir, scraping up brown bits from bottom of pan. Cook until reduced by half, about 3 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a simmer. Cook until reduced by half, about 3 minutes longer. Remove from heat and whisk in remaining 2 teaspoons butter just until it melts. Slice steak and divide among 2 serving plates. Toss mushrooms with red wine sauce and spoon over steak.

Chef Boyardee Recipe Contest

Chef Boyardee sent me some coupons and  few other little fun items and asked me to try and create a new recipe/twist using their product. First let me say that I love Chef Boyardee now offers a Whole Grain version of most of it's product line which contains 51% Whole Grain Pasta!

We do a soup/sandwich or salad Sunday every week and our sweet 4 year old (pictured above) does not like soup until I introduced Chef Boyardee ABC's/123's to her a few weeks back and now she is thrilled!!

Shana's Recipe:

One Can of Whole Grain Lasagna
1 cup of Baby Spinach fresh leaves
cracked peper
fresh basil leaves
fresh parm cheese to grate

So I keep it super simple I have been using Chef Boyardee Lasagna for a quick and tasty lunch for a very long time. I like to have the product heated and then in a bowl I drizzle olive il, cracked pepper and a "bed" of spinach leaves and then put the lasagna on top and then the fresh basil leaves topped with grated parm. cheese and more cracked pepper, so simple so yummy!

Check out these five new, quick and easy recipes that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less! Each recipe incorporates Chef Boyardee’s original, great-tasting meat and pasta into a balanced meal with a full serving of vegetables that the whole family can enjoy. -loved knowing that produce and meat departments would call other stores for items!  Since I shop around at a few Kroger's for certain items, this would really eliminate some of the headache.

Shana's tip: Talk to the Kroger employees especially in the produce and meat department let them know what you are looking for, if they don't have the item they can sometimes order it or call to other Kroger stores and let you know which store has the item you want!

Shana's tip: Oh those freebie Kroger coupons, which Dawn had several on her, if you have gone on-line and created a Kroger plus card account entered your card number and still do not get Kroger coupon mailers, go to the Kroger service desk and ask for help!!

-SCAN RIGHT POLICY:   I had no idea about price adjustment if an item rings up higher then the posted price.

Shana's tip:Scan Right Policy: IF an item scans up higher than the price marked on the shelf you can get that item for FREE (this does not apply to “clearance/saving’s aisle” products.

 
-did not know that Kroger did rain checks!  That will save a lot of running around if my Kroger is out of something I'm in need of have a coupon for.
Shana's tip: That's right you can get a rain check for items at Kroger! Just go to the customer service desk and ask!! I have only had to do this once as I find at my Kroger at least they keep their shelves well-stocked.

Donut Hutt Review and Giveaway!

I (Dawn) recently went to try a new donut shop called Donut Hutt in Collierville.  The donuts were absolutely DELICIOUS!!!  They were so tender and melt-in-your-mouth good!  The variety is huge, but you must go fairly early to get the best selection.  We went around 11am and they were almost sold out (which makes sense since they were so yummy)!  Since the first weekend we tried Donut Hutt, my family has looked for excuses to go to Collierville on Saturday mornings to eat these donuts (we live near Bartlett!). While the donuts are sweet, you will also find the staff delightful. They have what I would consider gourmet donuts (Bacon Maple donut - divine!)  Top that off with Ugly Mug coffee and you have one of the best donut shops in Memphis.
