Holiday Mail for Heroes: Send a Card for Free to the Military

NOW through DECEMBER 11, 2011

    OAK COURT MALL OFFERS HOLIDAY CARDS FOR HEROES

Locals encouraged to participate in Holiday Mail for Heroes

    WHAT:       Oak Court Mall is offering local area residents a chance to help spread holiday cheer with the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program. The Santa Set and Simon Guest Services, located at Lower Level Food Court, offers specially designed holiday cards from now through December 11 for shoppers to express their appreciation to service members, their families and veterans.

Shoppers express their appreciation to our brave men and women on the holiday cards and Oak Court Mall will take care of the mailing! Cards are hand-delivered to military bases, hospitals, and VA medical centers throughout the United States and around the world.

RECYCLE BANK IN MEMPHIS/SOUTHHAVEN AREA BY USING WASTE CONNECTION SERVICES

Awesome reader Katrina Hicks did some awesome research on ways to save money from recycling and here is her write-up!!! I spoke with Venzuay at  Waste Connection (398-5400) this morning and she was super helpful and said that any of you are welcome to call and speak with her and she will be happy to answer any questions. You can tell her Memphis Mommy told you to call, she must think I am crazy as honestly I was so excited to find out that FOR REAL I DON'T HAVE TO DRAG MY RECYCLING TO THE AG CENTER AND I GET COUPONS FOR IT (for Kashi etc!!) WOO-HOO! Let me share this, we are a HUGE RECYCLING family so we have been storing and driving our recycling to the Ag center so I AM SO THRILLED that Waste Connection is now participating in Recycle Bank! I discovered my bill was already at the lowest price so I have to pay $5 more every 3 months to add recycle pick up, well worth it as I will earn coupons and other rewards and I DON'T HAVE TO DRIVE TO THE AG CENTER!!! SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!! (Can you tell ;0)


We are always looking for coupons or savings opportunities with our groceries and gifts, but how often do we evaluate our regular monthly bills and how we can reduce them?  I was talking with some friends this week and heard about a way to reduce the cost of my ever-rising waste disposal bill.  As many MMM readers know, living outside of the city means paying for your own garbage pick up.  One of the companies that services our area, Waste Connections (Southern Disposal or Waste Disposal), now offers curbside recycling for people living in the county (Shelby).  When you enroll in their recycling program, they give you $5 off your monthly garbage disposal costs.  While I would imagine the price varies by location, for my area the cost for 3 months of garbage pick up with recycling is is $72.  There is a 12% fuel and environmental surcharge bringing my total to $80 and change.  The last bill with my (Katrina) current company, Allied Waste, was $89.35 and I don't get the option of recycling with them. (Be sure to see note at end of article)

Waste Connections offers Single Stream Recycling.  What's that?  It means you don't have to sort each individual type of materials.  You can throw all your recycleable waste into the same container. WOO-HOO for that!!!

WHAT CAN I RECYCLE?

Plastic Containers
Recycle all plastic containers marked with codes 1-7, usually found on the bottom of the container. Squeezing containers will help you to conserve space in your bin. DO NOT RECYCLE automotive and chemical product containers.

Aluminum Cans/Steel Food Containers
Recycle BEVERAGE/FOOD CANS. Crushing aluminum cans will help to conserve space in your bin.

Glass
Recycle all GLASS BOTTLES and JARS. Rinse containers and REMOVE LIDS and NECKRINGS. Paper labels don't need to be removed. Please NO used pesticide or herbicide containers, window glass, lightbulbs, mirrors, ceramics or drinking  glasses.

Paper
Recycle newspapers including glossy inserts. Place newspaper in paper bag or bundle. If you have extra newspapers, place them in a paper bag beside your recycling bin. Also, we now accept magazine, phone books, junk mail and other paper products.

Cardboard and Boxboard (which they don't take at the Ag center anymore!!)

And do you know one of the best parts about this recycling program?  Recycle Bank!  (recyclebank.com) When your recycling is picked up (bi-weekly) they weigh the contents of your can and you earn 2.5 points per pound toward coupons, gift cards, and services to locations right here in the Memphis area!  It takes 4-6 weeks for the information to load to your Recycle Bank account so they start you off with 300 points.

We should remember that even our monthly bills are negotiable!  If you use Credit Cards, call the company and negotiate your interest rate.  Cable?  Call them to see if they have any deals or discounts.  If you have been with a company for a while, they probably want to keep your business.  I talked to Allied Waste about the other options that are out there for their customers and they offered a reduction on my base rate from $70.50 or $66 plus taxes and fees.  That would bring my total quarterly bill to $81.  That price is neck-and-neck with Waste Connection.  Unfortunately, they do not offer any type of recycling option at this time.

Shana's note my bill be around $72 now that I have to add the $5.00 and I will get tons more points for coupons and Recycle Bank has GREAT OFFERS. I will do a right up on the benefit of recycle Bank which you can earn points for watching videos about recycling etc. so do create an account even if you don't plan on using a pick up company that offers this.
