Homeschooling Events/Info For Mid South Home Schoolers

Did you know that Memphis has a ton of resources available for homeschoolers? With new people moving into the area every day and many are joining My Memphis Mommy,Christie wanted to tell about just a few.

First of all, the Memphis Area Home Education Association is an organization that serves the Mid South area as a support system and they also provide activities such as spelling bee, art contests, yearbook, graduation and more. There are many support groups throughout the area that are a part of MHEA such as the group I am a leader of, Tipton County Home Educators.

In addition to the great organizations for homeschoolers, many of the museums have classes, workshops and special programs just for homeschoolers.

There is a great program at the Memphis Zoo that you can utilize to teach your child things that simply can't be done at home...unless of course you have lions, tigers and bears lying around! Check out what they have to offer.

My kids have been attending the science classes at the Pink Palace for a few years. They have classes for grades 1-8 on a few different dates each month. This year, the students are learning about the Antarctic and the PolarTrec as one of the educators at the Pink Palace, Alex Eilers prepares to embark on an adventure to study Weddell Seals in Antarctica. The classes are $6 per class per child and if you go on a Tuesday, the museum is free so you can also explore! SCORE!

 

The Brooks Museum also has a fantastic homeschool program where the children get to learn about great works of art. Their program is free and registration is once a year. The Fall Session was on the Impressionist Revolution and they took the children outside and taught them some of the painting techniques that were used during that time and then took them on a tour of the current exhibit, Monet to Cézanne/Cassatt to Sargent: The Impressionist Revolution with a docent to explain and teach. This was a lot of fun and very informative. Unfortunately, the registration is over for this year and they are full but be sure to check out their website for more information so you will know about it next year.

I am sure you have heard about the movie Dolphin Tale. Well, there will be a homeschool movie day on September 23rd where homeschool families will gather to go see the movie and show Hollywood that they support family friendly films. There is even curriculum available online to go along with the film.

Even Graceland has a special day for homeschoolers this year! On September 30th, they will have special ticket prices and activities throughout the day. I have to say, I am pretty excited about this. Having lived in Memphis most of my life, I am sad to say, I have NEVER been inside of Graceland! My kids want to go so this is the perfect opportunity. Reservations must be made by September 23rd by using the form on Graceland's website.

I have recently been introduced to a new website for homeschoolers in the West Tennessee area called Homeschool Roster. She posts many events, field trips and activities for homeschoolers. It will be a valuable resource for all homeschoolers in our area.

Redeeming Your Swag Bucks?
You can cash your Swag Bucks in at the Swag Store for all kinds of cool prizes: Gift Cards (Starbucks, PayPal, Target, Barnes & Noble, i-Tunes & more), Electronics, Apparel and more. Personally, I always choose to purchase the Amazon Gift e-Cards with my SwagBucks.(A $5 Amazon e-Card will cost you 450 SwagBucks.)

When you go to the Swag Store, the prize categories are listed, and within each category you will see the Swag Price of each prize. Once you have enough Swag Bucks to redeem the prize you want, you just select your prize and confirm your personal info (email address, shipping address etc.) Then a confirmation email will be sent to your in box. Just open the email, click on the confirmation link and within 7-14 days your prize will post to your account. Once it posts, you will be able to redeem your e-Gift Card immediately. If you choose a physical "plastic Gift Card" or another "physical" prize- just check your mail box- it should arrive within a couple weeks unless otherwise indicated.

Ways to Earn
There are several ways to earn Swag Bucks- the easiest way is for your internet searches. Let say you wanted to search for "My Memphis Mommy". You would type My MemphisMommy in the search bar and it would bring up the possible sites. Sometimes you will not earn anything for your search and other times you will earn Swag Bucks. It is random.

When you earn Swag Bucks for your Internet searches those are automatically credited to your account as long as you are signed in. If you are not signed in, a box will pop up asking that you sign in so you can claim your prize.

There are other ways to earn Swag Bucks such as, doing special offers, shopping, and referring your friends. Those information and links are all on the Swag Bucks home page. Once you have figured out the meat and potatoes of using Swag Bucks, you can click on the links to find other creative ways to earn more Swag Bucks.

Swag Bucks Tool Bar
I highly recommend that you download and use the Free Swag Bucks Tool Bar, otherwise you will have to return to the Swag Bucks Home Page every time you want to do a search that could earn you Swag Bucks (which will get tedious). Once you download the tool bar, it will be conveniently located below your address bar for easy access.

Another perk to adding the Swag Bucks Tool Bar is the Swag Codes released on the tool bar from time to time. These codes are time sensitive. Once you find the code, just copy the code and go to the Swag Bucks Home Page. Then paste the code in to the box that says "Swag Code" then hit the "GIMME" button. If you have entered a valid code before it expires the Swag Bucks will be added to your account. These Swag Codes vary in amounts; however, once you enter an accepted code it will let you know the amount you have earned for entering the code.

Where is this?

in The conference room at the Cordova library, the library opens at exactly 10:00 so no need to arrive early.

Can kids attend?

YES, please plan to watch them and their sweet little crumbs ;0) I will provide blocks!


Do I have to come right at 10 a.m. or stay the whole time?

NO THIS IS AN OPEN TO ANYBODY to drop in or stay the whole time event!!!


How many coupons do I need to bring?

ACTUALLY NONE, if you don't have any, no worries, we will have plenty!! If you bring coupons there is no need to have them cut or sorted.


So how exactly does this work?

I will have about 30 numbered folders, if you have any coupons you are not using, simply put them in a folder, we sit at tables and pass the folders around and you take what you want!! No need to cut or sort your unwanted coupons.


Anything else I can bring to swap?

Yes you can bring coupons city books or books themselves.

What else should I bring?

You can bring your coupon folder/book etc. if you like and we can look at how different people organize coupons. You can bring scissors, I will have some as well!

EXPIRED COUPONS FOR THE MILITARY
