Recipe: Patriotic Taco Salad Recipe

Click here to see this recipe from Taste of Home! I couldn't resist sharing a recipe that looks like a flag ;)

Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 envelope taco seasoning
  • 6 cups tortilla or corn chips
  • 4 to 5 cups shredded lettuce
  • 9 to 10 pitted large olives, sliced lengthwise
  • 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved

Directions

  • In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the water, tomato paste and taco seasoning. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes.
  • Place chips in an ungreased 13-in. x 9-in. dish. Spread beef mixture evenly over the top. Cover with lettuce. For each star, arrange five olive slices together in the upper left corner. To form stripes, add cheese and tomatoes in alternating rows. Serve immediately. Yield: 8 servings.

Editor's Note: If you wish to prepare this salad in advance, omit the layer of chips and serve them with the salad.

HAPPY FLAG DAY

Links provided may be from affiliate programs which help support this blog. Thanks for clicking!
I did look around for some Flag Day Freebies or discounts but did not find any ;0( Let me know if you know of any!

I love the flag! LOVE IT! I decorated my table this weekend to reflect our love of flag and country and will keep it this way until mid July at least ;0) I got most of this stuff 75% to 90% off each year I buy a few more things after Fourth of July! I have crafts for the kids to do today and on the 4th that I got at a great 90% off at Michael's last year. So scout out the stores, and WAIT for the sales ;0)

So have you put your flag out yet?

History of Flag Day:
The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'.

On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day.

Inspired by three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
