National Train Day-Memphis Event

Little Obie and Trolley Rides!

Saturday: May 7th at Central Station

The Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum will host an event at Memphis Central Station on National Train Day, May 7, 2011, from 9:00 AM til 2:00 PM. Features will be the Canadian National's "Little Obie" Safety Train, Trolley Rides courtesy of MATA and model train displays. The site for the celebration is the old power house, located on G. E. Patterson just west of Central Station.

MUD ISLAND IS CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING

The Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC), the entity responsible for management of the Memphis riverfront is closing Mud Island River Park beginning today due to flooding.

The service road between the Mud Island Roundabout and Mud Island River Park has taken on water significant enough to cause concern for vehicles and pedestrians. While visitors and staff could enter the river park via the East Terminal or main entrance on Front Street, emergency vehicles would be unable to safely access the area. Without emergency access, the RDC cannot allow the park to remain open to the public.

All events scheduled for the next seven days at Mud Island River Park, including those at River Terrace and Harbor Landing, are canceled. The RDC will update the closings on a go-forward basis based on road conditions.

The Memphis Yacht Club, which operates from Mud Island River Park, will modify its operations. The RDC will allow members of the Memphis Yacht Club to access the marina from the East Terminal, using the monorail walkbridge to Mud Island River Park or via a temporary water shuttle that the marina might operate between the dock and Jefferson Davis Park.

Mississippi River water is also encroaching into the riverwalk model at Mud Island River Park causing the Gulf of Mexico area to overflow its banks. To maintain a safe environment, the RDC is having the power cut off to the south end of the river park. Earlier this week, the RDC evacuated the maintenance compound at Mud Island River Park and turned off the power there as well.

The RDC is keeping a close watch on the Mississippi River Museum. While the elevations show the Museum to be above the predicted crest, we are taking every precaution to stave off any flooding that might lead to a loss of the important artifacts housed in the Museum.

The Mississippi River is expected to crest on Wednesday, May 11th and remain at +48 on the Memphis gauge for five to seven days thereafter. As long as there is significant standing water on the service road, Mud Island River Park will remain closed to the public. The RDC will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors.

Redeeming Your Swag Bucks?
You can cash your Swag Bucks in at the Swag Store for all kinds of cool prizes: Gift Cards (Starbucks, PayPal, Target, Barnes & Noble, i-Tunes & more), Electronics, Apparel and more. Personally, I always choose to purchase the Amazon Gift e-Cards with my SwagBucks.(A $5 Amazon e-Card will cost you 450 SwagBucks.)

When you go to the Swag Store, the prize categories are listed, and within each category you will see the Swag Price of each prize. Once you have enough Swag Bucks to redeem the prize you want, you just select your prize and confirm your personal info (email address, shipping address etc.) Then a confirmation email will be sent to your in box. Just open the email, click on the confirmation link and within 7-14 days your prize will post to your account. Once it posts, you will be able to redeem your e-Gift Card immediately. If you choose a physical "plastic Gift Card" or another "physical" prize- just check your mail box- it should arrive within a couple weeks unless otherwise indicated.

Ways to Earn
There are several ways to earn Swag Bucks- the easiest way is for your internet searches. Let say you wanted to search for "My Memphis Mommy". You would type My MemphisMommy in the search bar and it would bring up the possible sites. Sometimes you will not earn anything for your search and other times you will earn Swag Bucks. It is random.

When you earn Swag Bucks for your Internet searches those are automatically credited to your account as long as you are signed in. If you are not signed in, a box will pop up asking that you sign in so you can claim your prize.

There are other ways to earn Swag Bucks such as, doing special offers, shopping, and referring your friends. Those information and links are all on the Swag Bucks home page. Once you have figured out the meat and potatoes of using Swag Bucks, you can click on the links to find other creative ways to earn more Swag Bucks.

Swag Bucks Tool Bar
I highly recommend that you download and use the Free Swag Bucks Tool Bar, otherwise you will have to return to the Swag Bucks Home Page every time you want to do a search that could earn you Swag Bucks (which will get tedious). Once you download the tool bar, it will be conveniently located below your address bar for easy access.

Another perk to adding the Swag Bucks Tool Bar is the Swag Codes released on the tool bar from time to time. These codes are time sensitive. Once you find the code, just copy the code and go to the Swag Bucks Home Page. Then paste the code in to the box that says "Swag Code" then hit the "GIMME" button. If you have entered a valid code before it expires the Swag Bucks will be added to your account. These Swag Codes vary in amounts; however, once you enter an accepted code it will let you know the amount you have earned for entering the code.

Our church is currently hosting homeless who are in a program to help them secure housing and employment. A single father with a 11 month old arrived on Sunday and I was thrilled to be able to get him Pampers size 3 diapers, and Pampers wipes, and Gerber formula, 3 shirts and and 2 pairs of pants. Yes, of course I used coupons to get some great deals ;)

Pampers is also asking everyone to pay-it-forward by participating in the first Little Miracle Mission- to congratulate and offer support to an expectant mother with a gift or surprise gesture. Once more than 2,500 people pledge that they have achieved this mission, Pampers will respond by giving baby showers to expectant mothers nationwide just in time for Mother’s Day. Pampers will issue different missions throughout the entire year to celebrate all aspects of parenthood, and with the help of parents, family and friends, they hope to touch the lives of every baby born in the next year.
